Training video in Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer alleged kidnapping plot released

CHICAGO (WLS) – New video obtained by ABC7’s I-Team this evening shows Michigan militiamen charging Michigan militiamen during live-fire training, according to federal prosecutors. Prosecutors charged the men in an alleged plot to kidnap and possibly kill Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Front and center in the alleged plot to kidnap Governor Whitmer with a gun is a man named Barry Croft, who is seen carrying a flag of the Boogaloo Bois, an anti-government far-right movement. Croft is included in photos and videos obtained by I-Team that prosecutors say he and others were undergoing training in direct attack weapons in preparation for a violent attack on summer home of the governor of Michigan.

Prosecutors said the video was filmed during a militia live-fire exercise in southern Wisconsin. According to the latest court filings of the case, federal agents invited twelve classified informants to provide information on Barry Croft and other members of the Wolverine Watchmen, a militia group believed to be believed planned to kidnap and potentially kill the governor of Michigan last year.

Digital messages allegedly related to Croft, also made available today to the I-Team, refer to a bridge near the governor’s motel that authorities say militias have scouted. Photo and plan to blow up in commando attack. All of this information was made available at a hearing on Croft’s detention last January but the public release was withheld due to defense concerns that the images would poison the jury. potential team.

“It’s a legitimate request because it’s true, it can make it more difficult to choose a fair jury, but the reality is it’s rarely enough to ask for a transfer from any location pending trial to another location,” said former Chicago federal prosecutor Gil Soffer. Soffer, legal analyst for ABC7, said tonight that these live training videos can make it harder to defend Croft and others; but the real damage can come from dozens of informants.

“You can see such a high number in a vast drug conspiracy that stretches from coast to coast and beyond. That’s a pretty high number in a case like this. , it really reflects I think the government has gone to the extent of this investigation to try to do these cases,” Soffer told I-Team.

Before the FBI launched such an in-depth investigation, Werewolf Watchers wasn’t even considered a threat of violence according to attorneys to the defendants. In their latest defense this evening, they say the group is not engaged in any illegal activity. An attorney for Croft did not respond to I-Team’s request for comment but told ABC-Detroit that they “look forward to presenting all the facts to the jury this fall.”
