Tourists pay hundreds of dollars in race back from Ibiza and Majorca before 4am rule change

Mass-goers had to pay up to £1,000 to be returned to the UK before the quarantine deadline.

Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca are get off the green list and wear amber at 4am this morning.

Any traveler returning from the Balearic Islands who has not been fully vaccinated will now have to stay home for 10 days or risk a £1,000 fine.

It has cost hundreds of travelers – who only learned of the travel update on Wednesday – to pay large sums to return in time.

Some travelers at Palma Airport in Majorca say they have to pay hundreds of pounds more for Covid tests and flights to leave before the 4am deadline.

Miller Fitzgerald and his son Cameron, from Leicestershire, paid more than £1,000 to return early from their holiday.

“Cameron had his first crash but had scheduled a driver test so he didn’t want to be quarantined,” the father told The Times.

‘I paid £600 for tests and £400 for flights. I wasn’t too surprised when it changed as it was quite chaotic. So we just have to be ready. Undoubtedly, what should have been a cheap vacation didn’t happen. ‘

Many of the tourists coming home will be young people who are still waiting to get their second bump.

While thousands more will be forced to abandon vacation plans following last week’s travel update.

In recent days, people have been seen lining up outside testing centers as travelers hope to get the negative test strips they need to board a plane.

Ministers also dashed hope for Britons hoping to be able to hop across the Channel for a summer holiday in France.

On Friday, the government makes the shocking announcement that travel restrictions for France will be tightened.

The country has indeed been placed on its own list: it is still on the amber list, but double-stabbed visitors must still self-isolate when they return.

UK health professionals are worried about the number of infections linked to the Beta variant in France.

First discovered in South Africa in May 2020, scientists thought its mutation could help it avoid vaccines but thankfully it is virtually non-existent in the UK.
