Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that Tokyo Olympics should go ahead to show the world what can be achieved with the right set of plans and measures in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The competition kicks off on Wednesday morning with Japan’s softball team playing against Australia at the Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium. Olympic events usually begin before the official start for scheduling purposes.
The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics will be held on Friday, after a year of delays, weeks of negativity and public backlash.
But as the virus continues to wreak havoc across Japan, anything can happen.
It remains unclear whether the public health measures adopted will be enough to prevent the Olympics from becoming a major event.
Athletes have begun to arrive and more than 70 infections related to Olympic CNN said.
On Tuesday, an American gymnast and a Czech beach volleyball player tested positive for the virus, the Associated Press reported.
However, the International Olympic Committee and Japanese authorities say the Games will take place now. According to Reuters, the budget has increased to an estimated $15.4 billion.
Opinion surveys in Japan show that most people are not in favor of hosting an international sporting event during the pandemic.
Ghebreyesus, who is in Tokyo for the Olympics, expressed confidence Japan can safely host the Games.
“There’s no risk in life; there’s just more risk or less risk. And you’ve done your best,” said the head of the World Health Organization.
Tokyo’s growing infections have cast a shadow over a sports performance, which was postponed last year because of Covid-19, which will now take place without an audience.
Toshiro Muto, the chief official of the Japanese Games, did not rule out canceling the Games last minute on Tuesday.
