SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KTLA) – A California mother and her teenage son were arrested after the boy fired a loaded gun into the back seat of the mother’s car, injuring a toddler on Tuesday. , the police said.

Veronica Pyatt, 37, was driving when her 14-year-old son, who was “operating a loaded gun” in the back seat, fired a shot into her 20-month-old half-sister in the leg. himself, San Bernardino police said in a statement.

Investigators said that although the teen told his mother the gun went off, Pyatt continued to drive to their home, where she unloaded groceries.

When they got home, the teenager is said to have thrown the weapon in the trash. According to police, Pyatt did not attempt to take a gun from his son nor check his son in the car.

Once inside, Pyatt’s son revealed that the toddler had been shot when the gun went off, officials said.

The child was taken to a community hospital in San Bernardino, where officers notified police of the incident. The child was then taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, the police statement said.

Pyatt and the 14-year-old were arrested on suspicion of multiple felonies, although police did not specify which. Pyatt was sent to prison, while her son was sent to a juvenile detention center.

The case has been referred to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.

The county Department of Family and Children’s Services has been notified of the incident and is conducting its own investigation.
