“We are delighted to nominate Jawhar Sircar to the Upper House of Parliament,” a TMC statement said.
Born in Kolkata in 1952, he studied at St. Xavier and later Presidential College and University of Calcutta.
Sircar has had nearly 42 years of community service and is also a former executive director of Prasar Bharati.
Reacting to his nomination, Sircar said he was surprised when he was first nominated for the position but he will try to work for people.
He said: “I have been an official all my life. I am not a politician but I will certainly work for the development of the masses and raise issues of public concern in Parliament.” .
“The authoritarian, intolerant Narendra Modi regime should be opposed and resisted at all levels. This nomination will give me a better opportunity to speak out more strongly against this BJP government,” Sircar said. .
Sircar submitted his resignation to the Ministry of Information and Communications (I&B) in October 2016, four months before his scheduled retirement in February 2017.
“I have never supported Narenda Modimy policies and never faltered to speak my mind after receiving my super,” recalls Sircar.
He recently criticized the Center’s action against former West Bengal Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay over the issue of the Prime Minister’s failure to attend the Kalaikunda meeting.
“Sircar is a longtime official and has been a fierce critic of us since he retired,” said Joyprakash Majumder, vice president of the BJP state unit.
“But he has never opposed any wrongdoing by the Trinamool Congress government and is therefore unbalanced because his covert support has always been with Trinamool,” the BJP leader added.
During his long and illustrious career, the 69-year-old has headed India’s Ministry of Culture]from November 2008 to February 2012 – the longest for any Minister.
The Rajya Sabha seat was vacated after TMC leader Dinesh Trivedi resigned to join the BJP ahead of a council vote.
