Thunderstorms start 140 new lightning fires across BC

It’s been a busy few days for the BC Wildfire Service, with thunderstorms starting more than 100 new lightning-caused fires this week.

According to the provincial authority, there were 17,830 lightning strikes across the province from Wednesday to Friday night.

“During that period, there were 140 new wildfires caused by lightning,” BC Wildfire said.

However, it quickly found that 52 percent of these new wildfires were classified as “out,” “contained,” or “under control.”

This week’s lightning totals

  • Wednesday, August 10: 4,018 lightning strikes
  • Thursday, August 11: 5,205 lightning strikes
  • Friday, August 12: 8,607 lightning strikes

Total number of lightning strikes on Friday, by fire department:

  • Cariboo Fire Center: 433
  • Coastal Fire Brigade: 668
  • Kamloop’s Fire Center: 2,665
  • Northwest Fire Department Center: 2,016
  • Prince George Fire Center: 776
  • Southeast Fire Department: 784

Of note, BCWS is forecasting possible thunderstorms and a few scattered showers for Saturday.

Fire Department Information Officer Forrest Tower called the thunderstorms good and bad, adding that they could bring needed rainfall. However, he also said thunderstorms usually have strong winds that could fan a fire.

“So that’s something we’re going to focus our attention on over the next few days,” Tower said.

“And going into next week, it looks like we’re back in a warm and dry trend.”
