Thousands of tickets for the World Junior Championship games in Edmonton are still available

Unusual summer timing and an ongoing sex-assault scandal at Hockey Canada could be the reason there are still thousands of World Junior Hockey Championship tickets available on the eve of the tournament, says an Edmonton professor.

Prof Dan Mason, who teaches in the Department of Kinesiology, Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta, said when Canada hosts there are usually so many fans who want to see the home team take the ice that they are ready are to buy it Hockey Canada’s boxed games, which feature non-Canadian teams.

“The fact that Team Canada tickets are still available tells you that demand is much lower than for this type of event.”

The tournament will take place from August 9th to 20th at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Demand for tickets to World Juniors hockey tournaments in Edmonton down

Edmonton World Juniors Ice Hockey Tournament Ticket Demand Down – July 28, 2022

The inaugural 2022 championship in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta., was canceled Dec. 29 after just four days due to rising COVID-19 cases among players and officials, forcing game losses.

The 10-nation tournament will be without Russia, which was banned from participating by the International Ice Hockey Federation because of that country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Around 1,500 tickets are still available from Ticketmaster for the first game between the Czech Republic and Slovakia on Tuesday. About 1,300 tickets are available for the next day when Canada meets Latvia. Around 1,500 seats for the final are also available, along with hundreds of other tickets to see the 11-day tournament.

Mason said the timing of the games may be why interest is so low. The tournament usually takes place over the Christmas holidays.

“For the past 30 years, TSN has made World Juniors this holiday event that people attend,” he said.

“I’m watching it with my family over the (Christmas) break, so it’s become part of our Christmas tradition.

“By this time of year you probably already had plans to go to the lake, go to the mountains or do something summery. I don’t think we’re ready to give up those plans to watch hockey.”

“I think there are people who weren’t sure if they were going to go or not, and maybe because of that, decided not to go,” Mason said.
