‘The Wonder Years’ actor Dulé Hill talks about musical episode

NEW YORK – “The Wonder Years” has run more than half a dozen seasons on ABC, as it captured the imaginations of young boomers three decades ago. This season, the network revived the show with its black cast. Don Cheadle narrates the show as we watch the 12-year-old navigate his own life in the 1960s played by his father “Bill” played by Dulé Hill.

A special episode airing tonight features Hill’s real life partner. “My real-life wife Jazmyn Simon came on the show to be able to play around with us and create some havoc in my on-screen wife Saycon Sengbloh,” the actor explained via zoom. “Bill is stuck somewhere right in the middle.” He calls his wife, “A phenomenal actress and she always brings an interesting energy to the roles she plays so hopefully this is just another story on the journey.” Saycon, who was also on the Zoom call, commented, “Families that make money together stay together!”

On this set, a real milestone occurred in the young lives of Dulé and Jazmyn’s 2-year-old son, who got to see his parents working together for the first time! “He was wearing his little Mickey Mouse headset,” Dulé told me, “and he was watching, as soon as you know he was silent during the start. As soon as they said ‘cut it off,’ he She’ll like, “Mom. ‘ Saycon and I both went – “Awww!”

Dulé, a native of New Jersey, and Saycon, from Georgia, both spent years in NYC working on and off Broadway. They have discovered those talents to good use for this episode. Dulé was clearly delighted when he said, “We’re able to use all the skills we’ve honed on the New York stage, and being able to show it on the air is a really cool thing. “

As always, the trick is to make it look easy…when it’s not! Saycon notes, “We’re playing the piano. We’re singing. We’re dancing. We’re on stage. There’s so much, so many emotional scenes, so I’m glad I survived. that week of filming,” and she added with a laugh: “It was a lot.”

Both stars told me how grateful they were to be working on a TV show at a time when Broadway was still closed. Saycon told me she now comes back to cheering her friends on various shows because she firmly believes, “Broadway is back!”
