“The Wheel of Time” on Prime — Strong Debut for the Book Adaptation

Amazon Prime is continuously investing in creating sci-fi and fantasy series, and we can see why. The adaptation of the best-selling book series “The Wheel Of Time” by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson (he finished the last 3 books) had a great debut, and viewers are fascinated by this magical world. Amazon representatives confirmed that this is the best performing TV premiere of 2021.

The first three series were released on November 19, and the following episodes will be released weekly. According to Parrot Analytics, it surpasses “Game of Thrones” by being on top of the “in-demand” section worldwide across all streaming platforms.

More about the series

If you are a fan of the book series or just love fantasy novels and TV shows, this one is just for you. If you have a smart TV, you are all set, just open the Prime app and find the title. Or if you are one of the many who got themselves  Amazon Fire Stick and other fancy gadgets during the recent Black Friday, don’t wait to try it out. Amazon Fire Stick setup is effortless, and once done, you can enjoy all its perks. With a few clicks, you can open any streaming platform or many other apps that will offer you many ways of entertainment and enjoyment in the long winter nights.

The book series consists of 15 books (1 prequel and 14 main books) that came out between 1990 and 2013. After the passing of Robert Jordan, the last two books were finished based on his notes by Brandon Sanderson. The books have millions of fans, and now they can enjoy the TV series adaptation and see their favorite characters come to life.

In the first episode of “The Wheel of Time,” we meet all the existing characters we will follow along the way. Following the proposal of the Dragon being reborn, a powerful Aes Sedai named Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) and her Warder, Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney), are going on a quest to find them. Their journey takes them to a small town called Two Rivers. There they meet a group of 20-year-olds – the three boys Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford), and Mat Cauthon (Barney Harris), and the two girls Egwene al’Vere (Madeleine Madden) and Nynaeve al’Meara (Zoë Robins) who is the Wisdom of Two Rivers.

Moiraine believes that one of the 5 might be the Dragon reborn  — the one prophesied to either save the world or destroy it. Her suspicion is confirmed when a bit later in the episode, the small city is attacked by the power of the Dark One. This makes our heroes go on a journey to the White Tower, where the other Aes Sedais will protect them.

The next episodes follow our heroes on their journey to face different obstacles and challenges and meet other favorite characters from the books. The last episode of the first season will come out on the 24th of December, and we can’t wait to see what Amazon will show us in the next episodes.

How to watch the short animations

In addition to the episodes, Amazon Prime created short animations called “The Wheel of Time Origins,” explaining more history. However, those shorts are a bit hard to find. But if you haven’t read the books, those animations will help you a lot to understand the story. After all, we are talking about 15 books, and it will be impossible for Amazon to put everything in the adaptation.

To find the animated shorts, you should play the latest episode, pause it and click on the X-Ray feature. Then you should select “Bonus Content,” and you will see all of the already available ones. A new one is released with each of the main episodes.

The art is beautiful and gives you a peak in aspects of the story that are missing in the episodes. You will learn more about the difference between saidar and saidin and why men that can touch the One Power are being hunted. More details are given about The Breaking of the World, the fall of Manetheren, and more. Don’t forget to watch them.

What is next for “The Wheel of Time TV” series

In May 2021, it was announced that the show would be renewed for a second season. Getting a showed renewed six months before the first season even airs is not something usual, and it shows how much Amazon believes in the success of the series. It is still not sure if each season will be based on only one of the books or events will be mixed, but it is probably the latter.

The second season will be surprising us with a major casting change. The actor playing Mat Cauthon will be recast and replaced by Dónal Finn. We will also be seeing a lot of new characters that will play a vital role in the journey later on. It is still not announced when Season 2 will premiere, but we are so excited and can’t wait to see it.

Wrapping up

Amazon did an outstanding job with the adaptation of “The Wheel of Time,” and we are now excited to see the rest of the season and the ones to follow. We will see many more surprises on Prime, like the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” TV series. There will be a couple of exciting primaries like “The Witcher” second season on Netflix in December. It will be a great end of 2021 for fantasy lovers. 2022 holds many more surprises and TV shows we would love to watch.
