The point-and-click genre has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, with games like Kentucky Route Zero and Thimbleweed Park help introduce the once popular formula to a whole new generation of gamers. However, despite this newfound fandom, few could have predicted the release of a new one monkey island Game, with the series having been dormant since the release of Tales of Monkey Island more than a full decade ago.
This is why adventure fans got so excited when Ron teased Gilbert Return to Monkey Island in a blog post in April, even more so when it was announced that the game is in active development and would be released before the end of 2022. Now, a dedicated fan on Reddit thinks they may have found the game’s actual release date by digging around in the game publisher’s website metadata.
A user named LowLevel posted on the r/MonkeyIsland subreddit that while examining the metadata for the , he found some odd bits of code Return to Monkey Island section of the Devolver Digital website. One of the headings labeled “date_override” is set to “Coming 2022” which will be displayed on the site when viewed by a member of the public. The other, labeled simply “Date,” reads “2022-09-01T12:00:00.000Z,” suggesting that Return to Monkey Island could be released on September first.
While it’s entirely possible that the code is simply being used as a placeholder, LowLevel indicates that the same code on the cult of the Lamb section of the website matches the game’s release date perfectly, suggesting there’s a good chance it’s accurate. As Return to Monkey Island is slated to hit Gamescom next week, some are now predicting a release date trailer will be shown at the event, possibly with an “coming next week” announcement at the very end.
If that turns out to be the case, it wouldn’t be the first time a game’s release date has been announced so close to going on sale. For example, the June Nintendo Direct announced that the Portal: Companion Collection would appear the same day. In fact, Nintendo has launched many games by surprise over the past few years, with many Switch titles being made available within a week or so of the announcement.
This wouldn’t be the only major leak related to the game either, as a recently added Nintendo eShop listing has apparently been uncovered Return to Monkey Island‘s $24.99 price tag. Of course, this could prove to be a placeholder, as could this speculation about the new release date. Thankfully, with Gamescom just days away and September 1st looming on the horizon, fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out.
