The Resort is the new summer mystery that could be the next White Lotus

Did you love the glitzy rom-com? PalmSprings? Are you as obsessed with Cristin Milioti’s endless charm in projects as How I met your mother and made for love? Were you a big fan of The good place? And the most important, book smart hive, do you wish you had one of those Jareds wearing a Jared wearing a Jared shirt?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions – or even if you’re just looking for a damn good mystery saga – the perfect show is here. Peacock just took off The resortan exciting combination of mystery and rom-com, starring internet favorites like Cristin Milioti, William Jackson-Harper, Skyler Gisondo and Nick Offerman.

The resort comes from PalmSprings Co-writer Andy Siara, and references to the trippy Hulu rom-com lurk in every suite of the new series. Replace the carefree Andy Samberg with a nervous William Jackson Harper and this cavernous time portal with a murder at an abandoned resort and you have this new show. The first three episodes are already airing on Peacock, and more will follow weekly on Thursdays. In other words, here’s your next great summer feast.

In the series, Emma (Milioti) and Noah (Jackson-Harper) are a couple trying to rekindle their relationship by taking a trip to the Riviera Maya. In the back half of the first episode, they stumble across another path to revive the spark. No couples therapy needed. They will instead solve a decades-old disappearance case. relationship goals!

Emma finds a missing Motorola Razr belonging to Sam (Gisondo), who disappeared from another resort nearly 15 years ago. (This got me thinking: is there some creep out there that found my old Motorola Razr and is now following me? Where have all our Motorola Razrs gone?) Emma and Noah go through deleted messages and evidence photos on the phone and make a big one Detour on the journey to the now-defunct resort where Sam and his new lover, Violet (Nina Bloomgarden), disappeared.

Aside from the glorious cast, the big draw of The resort is the menacing yet luxurious aesthetic of the abandoned hotel. There’s something so alluring about an abandoned, possibly haunted, hotel. The resort navigates between the 2007 version of Oceana Vista, when it was still busy, and the wrecked, apocalyptic version of 2022.

The series’ central relationships – Noah and Emma; Sam and Violet – got me hooked too. After 10 years together, things between Noah and Emma are stale. Nothing is wrong, but nothing is real To the right, either. They love each other, but they don’t really like each other, and they’re way too tired to break up and start dating again. We see less of Sam and Violet, although their fresh, youthful spirit is a great contrast to the other couple.

Neither couple is as captivating as the lovers’ enemies PalmSprings; still with The resort, Siara proves he has a knack for designing love arcs without boring clichés. And he once again found a way for Milioti to show off her star power. The actress is a fiery ball of boredom and intrigue in both stunning sagas.

Viewers will undoubtedly make a connection between them The resort and The White Lotus, HBO’s 2021 hit by Mike White. While the basic premise is similar – a murder case casts a dark shadow over a glamorous paradise – the tones of each series differ strikingly. Whereas The White Lotus is a sharp satire, The resort leans more into mystery and eeriness. It’s certainly not as meme-able as The White Lotus; ah, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Peacock rolled out The resort with the first three episodes last week opening up the core mystery of the saga. To be honest, with each episode lasting about half an hour, it’s a bit of a drag, but the payoff is its worth it. Make your way through the show’s convoluted exhibition and you’ll get a grand twist in Episode 4, out Thursday. You’ll have to watch the series to fully understand it – but think about it memory.

It’s also another series that makes the case for finally shelling out a Peacock subscription.

The resort has chosen to end most of its weekly releases with cliffhangers as well. With a weekly release pattern – unlike other thrilling series, sorry stranger things– the series has presented itself as one of the most gripping thrillers of the summer. And also with a touch of romance? We deserve it.
