The position of the stars in the sky of Majora’s mask
A 3D programmer and artist using the username Zel took to Twitter to reveal a secret he discovered by the classic game. The Legend of Zelda: The Mask of Majora.
He noticed that the positions of the stars in the sky were random for each player. But what’s surprising is that the positions of the stars are based on the player’s save file name. He shared a screenshot of the code that shows how the 8 characters of the filename are used to generate the random placement of the stars.
So the sky is personalized for each player
The code shown above means every player in Majora’s mask get their own custom sky with random constellations in it.
One might wonder why the game developers decided to choose random constellations instead of a fixed sky box. To date, there is no confirmed explanation behind their intentions. But if that’s the randomness they’re aiming for (hard to get in older games) then using the filenames’ characters seemed like a viable option at the time.
A player asked how many star arrangements can be achieved in Majora’s mask – and the number of guesses turned out to be quite large!
Other Twitteratis wondered if this still applies to the 3DS remake of the classic game. Sadly, it looks like this feature didn’t appear on the 3DS version released in 2015.
However, this is a great feature that leads to different names ending in their own special star set. Share this cool TIL with MM Which player knows!
