When Michael got married to Dakota on October 14th, that day seemed perfect. The bride spread happiness; as Michael crossed the line, the bridegroom shone with pride; weather cooperated.

One of the celebrations at the ceremony was that Michael’s father was not there to pass him by or give him to him.
His father, David Pauling, was once a pedestrian and served as a probation officer in the Gallipolis Court. But on May 22, 2007, the lives of Michael and his family changed forever.

That day, Pauling arrested a 22-year-old man on the street. The young man, instead of obeying the officer’s orders, fled to the Ohio River. He threw himself into the water from the high shore.

Pauling then jumped. Unfortunately, the 32-year-old officer did not show up again. His body was recovered early the next morning.

Although he was only nine years old at the time of his father’s death, Michael vividly remembers the moment he learned of his disappearance.

“I remember my mother telling us to sit down and say she was no longer with us and it was actually one of those things where ‘Dad disappeared, he just went for the night,'” she recalled. she.

“And I think it was two weeks later that he’s gone and he’s not coming back.” To honor her father on her wedding day, Michael wrote a bouquet wrapped in a blanket with a medallion. the words “Walk with me today, dad.”

What Michael didn’t know was that her father’s co-workers had planned a surprise to make her wedding day even more special and make sure her memory lives on.

A father-daughter dance is a significant part of a wedding reception. It is a sentimental moment that is divided between father and daughter.

Since Michael’s father could not be in the body, his colleagues recorded him in the hall to dance with the bride.

Michael told Good Morning America about his attitude to seeing the first officer:

“The first police went out. He was a government soldier and I just lost him, ”she said.

“Everyone was in uniform and I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ I fell into his chest and lost it.”

What about the police officers. Even 10 years after the death of their colleague, they still take care of their daughter on special days.

Sheriff Matt Champlin explained how it all came together:

“We just had a trick team behind Michael,” he said. “We wanted to give him a small piece of Dave’s on his wedding day, which he couldn’t have been there, so we could each take it with us every day.”

The officers did exactly what they were told to do. Michael always remembers what they did for him.

Michael’s new husband, Dakota, spoke of how his father-in-law had affected him even in his death:
