We reported this morning, possibly due to the war with Firefox and Brave, that Microsoft has not possible for apps like EdgeDeflector to usurp microsoft-edge: // protocol.
The app’s developer said that fixing this would require destructive changes to Windows and therefore gave up the fight.
On the left stage, developer Robert Maehl, who has a new app called MSEdgeRedirect.
Like EdgeDeflector, his app allows you to redirect News, Search and Weather Results to Your Default Browser.
Unlike EdgeDeflector, his application filters and passes command line arguments of Microsoft Edge processes to your default browser instead of sticking to
microsoft-edge: handlers, which will provide resilience against future changes.
The app just needs to be running (in your system tray) to do the trick and can be set up to run at startup.
The only weird bug of the app is that if you open an Edge window, the link opens in both your default browser and Edge.
Maehl said he’s looking to replace Bing links used by Windows Search, for example, with your own preferred search engine, but that could happen later.
