Horror movies around the holidays are always a great time. While Halloween is clearly the most appropriate holiday for the occasion, there are also plenty of horror movies revolving around Christmas. Some are true classics, like 1974 Black Christmas which actually started the slasher genre. Others like 1997 Jack Frost might be worth skipping.
Five years ago a quiet Christmas horror movie slipped a little under the radar. With a first-time director and potential cast, the film is made in Australia Better be careful has garnered some steam since its initial release as it appeared on streaming sites like Shudder and Tubi. Horror movie fans especially enjoyed this movie as it was completely different from what a lot of viewers expected and it became a must-see movie during the Christmas season.
The film is set during the Christmas season and follows a babysitter named Ashley who is leaving town on a business trip. The boy she’s babysitting, 12-year-old Luke, is a regular customer of hers, so evenings should be regular. Unfortunately, Ashley and Luke, as well as his silly friend Garrett, start to realize some weird and spooky things That could mean they’re in danger. The movie is much more than that, but those are all the details you should know before you watch. Better be careful is a surprisingly roller coaster ride of a movie, and going in the dark will give the most satisfying results. Just know, it’s worth it.
If you want to see a movie, stop here. Otherwise, spoilers for Better be careful front.
Outstanding feature of Better be careful and why a lot of people think it’s a great movie is because of its big twist and the way it was made. Essentially, the entire opening of the movie is setting itself up for something it isn’t. However, that setup is so well written and seems so natural that the casual viewer who is blind probably won’t see the change coming. After all was revealed, it didn’t take long, little clues are given in the head begins to make sense and the tone of the movie is completely different.
What the twist reveals, is a secret villain. After Ashley found out that Luke staged a home invasion with his friend Garrett to scare and eventually impress her with a crush, she was furious. However, Luke attacks Ashley, ties her up and holds her hostage. It is revealed that the real danger along, is Luke. He is a 12-year-old psycho and after this point, the rest of the movie is for Ashley trying to break free from his grip as he psychologically and physically tortures her and a few friends. appear.
When the initial turning point happened, it was difficult to determine where this movie would go. A lot has happened and there is still much to be done Small twist and reveal. The ride up and down, very fun and easy to invest, and will be enjoyed by many. It is also a good play on the story “The Babysitter & the Man Upstairs”, which pays homage to some of the Black Christmas and very openly in When a stranger calls.
The cast of Better be careful, which is largely hampered by teen and pre-teen characters, is brilliant. The heroine of the story is played by Olivia DeJonge. The character is defined as an “all-American” type of girl. Very sweet, she is moving to a big city, and of course, she is beautiful with many suitors. DeJonge plays the role and plays it convincingly, fully embodying that sort of familiar character. She is likable and trustworthy, which makes it easy for her to take root for her survival.
Luke and Garrett are played by Levi Miller and Ed Oxenbould, respectively. Oxenbould and Olivia DeJonge previously played siblings in M. Night Shyamalan’s Visit. While they’re not nearly equal in this movie, they do have some really sweet interactions. Oxenbould also does a great job as the goofy, goofy friend and is the film’s great comedic entertainment. Miller is also a prominent character in this film and will likely be one of the movies worth watching in the future. He’s a very convincing psychopath and a great villain, but he still maintains his true child-like nature, which is important due to his character’s age. It was a pleasure to watch him act in this movie.
In much smaller but still great roles are Virginia Madsen and Patrick Warburton as Luke’s parents. They are very funny and although they are only seen for a short time, it is easy to tell who they are in an instant. They are wealthy and completely out of touch with the world, which seems to have been passed on to their children in the worst possible way.
When it comes Movies about Christmas and holidays, people usually have their favorites. However, if audiences have watched the same movie every year for their entire lives, that might feel a bit boring. When that time comes, it’s a sign to kick things off and look for some hidden gems. Better be careful definitely fit that description.
From Frances Ha to Lady Bird to Little Women, Greta Gerwig has successfully written non-romantic love stories.
