Welcome to Episode 8 of the ESPN PRod Pod, the official podcast of the ESPN Communications Division. The PRod Pod takes you behind ESPN’s unmatched storytelling by introducing the folks behind the content material – who they’re, the place they’re from and the way they create the magic.
It’s solely applicable the recording of this episode came about on Sept. 7, 2021 – 42 years to the day that ESPN first signed on as a spunky upstart within the fledgling cable business. Quickly thereafter, a bright-eyed, keen St. Bonaventure College graduate, Chris LaPlaca, joined the ESPN PR workforce in Bristol, Conn., recalling how his first “workplace” was situated in a trailer with a view of a scrap steel store.
Because the community developed its pioneering spirit, LaPlaca was on the bottom ground of charting a course for what’s now an award-winning, best-in-class PR division that employs strategic instruments like websites, social media and, sure, PODCASTS in telling the story of ESPN.
LaPlaca was named ESPN’s Senior Vice President, Company Communications in June 2008. For LaPlaca, as he shares with Communications Affiliate Producer and PRod Pod host Jon McLeod, “relationships are what matter most” and he has constructed a boatload of them in over 40 years with ESPN. Moreover, LaPlaca reveals how he leans on his days within the service business for survival within the company world.
Within the concluding “Fab 5” section with ESPN Fan Relations Senior Coordinator Kiana Lowe, LaPlaca’s anecdotes relating to former colleague Stuart Scott and the occasion held on ESPN’s 40thanniversary are particularly poignant dialogue subjects.
