No one has come forward to publicly take off their hats, but multiple sources told Global News that Patrick Brown, a former PC Ontario leader and mayor of Brampton, has been actively building the phone in preparation for a bid.

Pierre Poilievre, the party’s fire banking finance critic and Ottawa area MP, is also expected to push the leadership effort after leaving the final race.

The Conservatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Global News.

Any candidate or candidates who have sold their membership can get a big start whenever the party’s national council officially kicks off the leadership race.

The party’s Leadership Election Organization Committee (LEOC) has yet to be announced, but its decisions on race shape could have a serious impact on which candidate ultimately wins.

A short run is expected to give the party an advantage over candidates with significant names in the party – such as Poilievre, beloved by the Conservatives for being hated by Liberals and radicals, and who has available social media followers to blast off the messaging campaign.

A longer race would reduce that advantage somewhat and benefit campaigns with a strong organization that can sell a lot of memberships – like Brown or Lewis, if the socially conservative wing gathered for her cause.
