The Coen Brothers May Have Directed Their Last Movie Together

After many years of Oscar-winning, genre-bending work as a writing and directing duo, Joel and Ethan Coen could also be parting methods creatively. Composer Carter Burwell, who has scored practically each Coen brothers movie, advised throughout a current interview that the latter sibling could also be retiring from the director’s chair. 

“Ethan simply didn’t need to make films anymore,” Burwell stated on the podcast Score (by way of Los Angeles Magazine), in reference to Joel’s upcoming solo undertaking The Tragedy of Macbeth—the primary film written and directed by Joel, solo. “Ethan appears to be very comfortable doing what he’s doing, and I’m unsure what Joel will do after [Macbeth],” Burwell continued. 

The composer, who has labored on Fargo and No Nation for Outdated Males, stated that the Coens have “a ton of scripts they’ve written collectively which can be sitting on numerous cabinets,” including, “I hope perhaps they get again to a few of these as a result of I’ve learn some they usually’re nice. However I don’t know. We’re all at an age the place we may retire, however I don’t suppose that’s precisely what’s going to occur. It’s a splendidly unpredictable enterprise.”

Following the duo’s final joint film, 2018’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs for Netflix, Ethan expressed a need to step again from directing. In fall 2019, he instructed the Los Angeles Times that he was “giving films a relaxation” in an effort to give attention to his playwriting. The brothers even spoke about retirement again in 2016, with Joel sharing that they originally intended to “stop after 10 films” à la Quentin Tarantino. Ethan added, “It will get too alarming desirous about that—what number of you’ve achieved. And in methods you’re not even conscious in the event you’re repeating your self.
