The Blue Jays announce a $230 million stadium renovation plan

TORONTO (AP) — The Blue Jays on Thursday announced plans for a $230 million renovation of Rogers Center, their downtown home since 1989, but said the change will not involve replacing the artificial turf surface with grass.

The renovation, which will be phased in over the next two or three winters, will begin with the team adding raised bullpens in left and right field, adjusting the dimensions and heights of the current outfield wall, and adjusting the outfield seating areas to include bars and patios to add , as well as a section grandstands.

“The biggest focus has been on modernizing the fan experience,” said Mark Shapiro, President of Blue Jays.

Shapiro did not disclose the outfield dimensions and fence heights, saying they are ongoing.

After the 2023 season, the team will redesign the lower shell to create better sight lines and reduce the amount of foul territory, and replace all upper deck seats.

The Blue Jays will also use the renovation to upgrade and expand the home clubhouse, as well as player facilities such as weight rooms and practice areas.

Shapiro said the stadium’s overall capacity would be reduced after the renovations were completed, but couldn’t say by how much.

Rogers Center opened in June 1989 as the SkyDome as the first retractable-roof stadium in the major leagues. It is now the seventh oldest stadium among the 30.

Shapiro called the plans “a mid-term solution,” adding that the Blue Jays would eventually have to consider building a new stadium or undergoing an even more extensive renovation of their current home.
