The artist said what Cuphead would look like if the game was based on different cartoons

Cuphead was released in 2017, and it quickly became a hit as an Xbox and PC exclusive title. One of the reasons for the buzz surrounding the game is its eye-catching art style. Recently, a talented artist came up with the idea of reimagining the main character in other iconic animation styles of the past.
In a post on TikTok, a user named Austin Light shared a collection of drawings based on Cuphead. What makes these images stand out is that each of the main characters is based on a different era in anime history. While the original art for the character was influenced by classic cartoons from the 1930s, these new drawings sought to recreate Cuphead in a variety of art styles.
The first Cuphead redesign featured in the video was from the 1980s. This version has a much taller and more muscular appearance, as the artist has said that most cartoon characters in this era look “unnecessary and wearing weird clothes.” Following this design, a photo of the 1990s-inspired Cuphead was seen. According to Austin Light, some of the inspiration for this drawing came from Animaniacs, The Ren and Stimpy Show, and The Adventures of Tiny Toon.
Entering the early 2000s, the Cuphead had a shorter and more blocky appearance. The artist commented that the look is similar to the one found in Parents are pretty weird. The video then reveals an image of Cuphead reminiscent of the show Adventure Time, with Austin Light noting that the characters on that show don’t have noses. Following this image, a photo of Cuphead from the 2010s made mostly of real-world objects. According to the artist, this particular design is based on shows like The wonderful world of Gumball and Pickles and peanuts. In addition, the creator even threw in a Cuphead anime picture.
In addition to sharing these various designs for Cuphead, Austin Light revealed that the inspiration for the project came from his son. He said that his son loves Cuphead and often play games. According to the creator, the game is like playing in a cartoon.
Videos showcasing different Cuphead designs have become popular with gamers. At the time of writing, this clip has reached more than 432 thousand views and 91 thousand likes on TikTok. In addition to these impressive redesigns, you can find more videos based on popular video game characters on the TikTok account for Austin Light. Some of the other characters he has drawn include Popular Sonic the Hedgehog and Banjo and Kazooie. Furthermore, he has done designs for Marvel characters and even Garfield.
With these Cuphead redesigns now complete, it will be interesting to see what other characters the creators decide to draw next. Maybe he will try re-imagining the Demon boss, the main antagonist in the game.
Cuphead available for PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One.
