The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends universal school masks for everyone over 2 years of age

The American Academy of Pediatrics released new COVID-19 guidance for schools on Monday, supporting face-to-face learning and, among other things, recommending universal mask wearing at school for all. everyone over 2 years old.

“The AAP believes that, at this point in the pandemic, given what we know of low school transmission rates when appropriate precautions are used, coupled with the availability of an effective vaccine, As a result for people 12 years of age and older, the benefits of school directly outweigh the risks in all cases,” the guidelines said.

One of the key interventions AAP offers includes all students over the age of 2 and all school staff wearing masks at school unless they have a health or developmental condition that prohibits it. .

The reasons for this recommendation include, but are not limited to: a significant proportion of students who are not yet eligible for immunization; face coverings protect people who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 and reduce transmission; and potentially difficult to monitor or enforce mask policies for the unvaccinated.

In addition, other actions recommended by the AAP include all eligible individuals to be immunized; availability of adequate and timely testing resources; and the strategies that have been developed may be revised and adjusted according to the situation of the community.

“Given the above principles, AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for a school’s COVID-19 plan should begin with the goal of keeping students safe and physically fit at school.” the guide said. “The importance of face-to-face learning is well-documented and there is evidence of negative impacts on children due to school closures in 2020.”
