In fact, it looks like many of the games listed were shortlisted because of their status or where their sponsorship and marketing came from. What Are Indie Games Considered

While games like Kena: Bridge of Spirits have been fortunate enough to get marketing and sponsorship from Sony, others have not had the same opportunity, which, in turn, may affect the overall outcome of the final product. That does not mean Kena: Bridge of Spirits it doesn’t deserve any awards, but rather its access to funds that most indie developers don’t or might not have put it ahead of the pack at The Game Awards, which doesn’t recognition games also have a big impact but don’t get much attention mainly because they don’t have big companies like Sony doing their marketing.

It sparked debate about what should or shouldn’t be considered an indie game. After all, there is a big gray area between games developed by a small team if not a fan Stardew ValleyEric Barone’s or Undertaleof Toby Fox and the largest companies, such as Personaby Atlus, Our Last One‘Naughty Dog and Bethesda, now owned by Microsoft. While ‘indie’ sometimes refers to developers who self-publish their games, Annapurna Interactive has one title on the nominations list and Devolver Digital three, making up more than half. Several indie games coming out in 2021 are beloved and impactful, leaving lasting impressions on both players and the industry. They don’t necessarily deserve more or less titles on the list like Loop Hero, an interesting take on the roguelike formula, though 12 minutes raised eyebrows as it has seen extremely mixed reactions due to its strange ending.

East is a great example, like Chicory: A colorful story. Both games are inspired by Zelda, but in largely different ways. Looking at the old one, it’s clear where the design element of the old is Zelda accompanying games as well as in its puzzles, but East best known for its beautiful story. Kaleon the other hand, saw even more backlash for its rich puzzles and surprisingly heartfelt story.

Black is another formidable game inspired by Zelda — Breath of the Wildexploratory element — but with a concept rooted in ‘s first film Star Wars sequel trilogy, Divine Power Awakens. With a catchy art style, a beautiful soundtrack composed by rock musician Japanese Breakfast, and a relaxing setting, it covers many of the hot spots in today’s indie games. However, it is a pity that it did not make the list of nominations of The Game Awards. Others, such as Valheim, an online crafting and survival game currently in Early Access, Little Nightmare 2, a non-traditional horror title and maybe even Maquette, a beautiful puzzle game about a failed relationship, also did not make the list but is a great title that players should try.
