The 18-year-old was charged with fatally shooting Woodside High School student in court on Thursday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Demari Batten, 18, a former Warwick High School student charged in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Woodside High School student Justice Dunham will appear in court on Thursday for a hearing preliminary hearing.

Batten is charged with second degree murder in case.

The shooting happened in December outside Menchville High School next to the car Batten drove to a school basketball game. Police say the tension first began with a verbal argument in the school gym, and escalated in the parking lot.

Batten was detained by the police at the scene and has claimed he shot Dunham in self-defense.

Justice Mike Dunham’s Father Witnesses told him that Justice was under attack at the time.
