15 Texas A&M hoping to get its second nine-win season in a row when it starts going head-to-head with LSU in Death Valley on Saturday night. In its last SEC game, the Aggies lost 29-19 to Ole Miss 15 as the Rebels picked quarterback Zach Calzada twice and had an offense of more than 500 yards against the Texas A&M defense.
LSU lost three SEC games in a row and only beat ULM 27-14 in what was supposed to be a cupcake match. However, 5 of the Tigers’ 6 losses were against the top teams at the time of the match. Midfielder Max Johnson 319 yards and two touchdowns in the win over ULM, but the Tigers averaged just 2.4 yards for each hit on the ground.
Texas A&M has beaten LSU just twice in nine games with the Tigers since joining the SEC, but both have come since Jimbo Fisher took over the program in 2018. The Aggies haven’t beaten LSU in Baton Rouge since since 1994 when Texas A&M was at the Southwest Conference. The last time these two teams played at LSU, Joe Burrow threw three touchdowns and 352 yards 50-7 on his way to the 2019 national championship.
Texas A&M vs LSU: Need to Know
Coach O’s Finals: The man who led that 2019 Tigers team to the national championship, Ed Orgeron, coached his last game at LSU against Texas A&M after the university announced that Orgeron won’t be back after six seasons with the show. Orgeron entered his final game with a 50-20 record as head coach, including a 15-0 national championship in 2019. However, LSU fell to 10-11. in the past two seasons. If Texas A&M wins, LSU will finish under 500 for the first time since 1999. Whichever coach takes over has a long way back to consistent national contention.
Inconsistent year: Texas A&M through 2021 ranks 6th in the AP Top 25 and is considered a favorite to challenge Alabama for the SEC West crown. Aggies beat then-No. 1 Crimson Tide for the first time since 2012, but heavy losses to Arkansas, Mississippi State and Ole Miss came back to haunt them as Texas A&M dropped to 4th place in the SEC West despite their success. Beating LSU would give the Aggies a 10-fight win for just the third time since the Southwest Conference ended, but Texas A&M’s expectations were higher.
Dynamic duo: While the Texas A&M pass is still inconsistent at best, the Aggies’ back runs have helped keep the season on track. Bruiser Isaiah Spiller and speedster Devon Achane combined for 1,845 yards of charge and 15 touches behind a young attacking line. The Tigers surrender almost 145 yards per game, so expect Jimbo Fisher to break the LSU defense early and often.

Both of these teams were disappointing compared to expectations, but LSU played terrible football with a quality offensive line. The only ranked win of the season was against Florida, which fell apart. Texas A&M could limit LSU’s running games and make them one-sided enough to win. Prediction: Texas A&M (-6.5)
