Tesla owners locked their cars for several hours because the app failed

Last night, Tesla owners around the world complained about their apps being thrown 500 HTTP server errors and did not update the status of their vehicle.
Some owners have also complained of not being able to start their car, although the reason for this is unclear, as the app still works properly independent of the Tesla network.
The outage appears to have lasted for 5 hours and is now resolved.
According to Elon Musk, this is due to a configuration error that “increases the granularity of network traffic”.
Will be back online now. It looks like we may have inadvertently increased the granularity of network traffic.
Sorry, we’ll take steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Tesla recently updated their app to include the ability to stream video from your car’s camera to your phone, and it’s possible this issue is related to that change.
While you can unlock your car with your phone, Tesla still encourages you to keep your key card with you as a backup.
