Sunken high pollution risk barge to be removed north of Campbell River, BC – BC

A sunken barge considered a high risk to the marine environment will soon be removed from waters north of Campbell River, BC

The 98 meters trailer princess landed in Duncan Bay in February, full of potentially polluting hydrocarbons. Its removal will cost about $4.7 million.

“Canada follows the polluter pays principle. This means that the polluter is liable for the cost of any damage caused by its pollution,” Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) wrote in a news release Thursday.

To date, 89,000 liters of hydrocarbons and oily water have been removed from the sunken ship.

The Canadian Coast Guard removed about 80,000 gallons (34,000 liters) of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from their tanks, but were unable to safely enter all parts of the barge during an initial assessment due to the hazardous environment.

According to the DFO, a contractor has since removed an additional 55,000 liters.
