Stephen Colbert fires back at proud boy Joseph Biggs for whining about his jokes

Stephen Colbert’s name appeared in a recent statement from a lawyer representing one of the Proud Boys charged with seditious conspiracy for the January 6 riot. So the late show The presenter clearly felt he had no choice but to share his response with viewers on Wednesday night.

“Some of the people that are in the videos of these hearings are not happy with the public at large,” Colbert said on the eve of another Jan. 6 committee hearing on Thursday. In particular, he was referring to the leader of the Proud Boys “and worst-case scenario” David Cross Joseph Biggs, who faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted in his case.

“When he steps out, this Proud Boy will be a proud member of AARP,” joked the host.

But what really struck him was the statement from Biggs’ attorney, which read in part: “Given the mounting and undeniably spectacular round-the-clock press and media coverage of negative pressure on the fraternity known as the Proud Boys morning joe to Stephen Colberts late showand coupled with this week’s televised House Select Committee hearings on January 6th, all of which continue to saturate the jury pool of media-obsessed Washington, DC.

“You know, ladies and gentlemen, I make a lot of jokes about these violent fascists,” Colbert replied, pretending to burst into tears. “But hearing that even one of them noticed? I feel so seen! You hate me, you really hate me!”

As for trying to move Biggs’ trial to a place where the Proud Boys have a “better reputation,” Colbert suggested “1930s Berlin.”

Ultimately, he decided to speak directly to the jury pool he allegedly corrupted. “Although this is a high-profile case, in our justice system the defendant is innocent until proven guilty. So I want everyone on the potential jury to hear me when I say it,” Colbert intoned calmly, before turning to another camera to exclaim, “You’re going to jail, you neo-fool!”

“And if you don’t like it, you can come and get me!” he added. “My name is Joe Scarborough and I love coffee!”
