Stephen Colbert embarrasses Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt over ‘stupid’ FBI Trump crackdown theory

Stephen Colbert opened his last monologue before that The Late Show takes a break for the rest of the summer by doing another lap of honor over the FBI’s Mar-a-Lago raid.

In particular, the host noted a new pattern in the way the former president’s biggest defenders have changed their minds in recent days. “It started with ‘nothing to see here,’ and quickly became ‘everything you see was brought here by the FBI,'” he said. “And all of the former president’s henchmen took the bait.”

After playing a montage of Trump allies spreading this conspiracy in conservative media, Colbert said: “You know that when you accuse someone of planting evidence before they say they even found anything? When you know they’re going to find something.”

“So how did the feds supposedly bring in 12 boxes of evidence that they took out?” he asked. “Ainsley Earhardt has a very stupid theory.”

That fox & friends The co-host pointed out this week that the FBI agents arrived with backpacks and asked, “What was in those backpacks?”

“Good point, Ainsley!” Colbert replied. “Everyone knows you have to search the cops before they search you. That’s why I always tell TSA, ‘Hang on mister, I’m going to flatten your stuff first.’”

The host later explained that “to conduct the search, the FBI had to produce a search warrant and in order to give the ex-Prez a detailed receipt for everything they took in order to be able to take anything.” And while Trump released those documents and “the mystery and the intrigue could be solved,” added Colbert, “he obviously doesn’t want to, because as long as we don’t know, he’s free to say anything.”

As a result, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Thursday that the Justice Department had filed a request to have these documents unsealed. “The ex-president has to go to court by tomorrow to prevent this,” said Colbert, “this would be the first time he has turned down an offer of full release.”
