Stephen A. Smith Lauds NBA on Hiring Black Coaches

Stephen A. Smith spent many segments on ESPN’s First There is a shortage of black head coaches in the NBA. So when there seems to be progress, he deserves credit.

Smith previously called tenants of Steve Kerr and Steve Nash as an example of Privilege of the white man, was given the opportunity to be ready for a championship despite not having any NBA coaching experience. Last month, Smith storm after rallying and calling for NBA players to endorse more black coaches. But since the regular season ended, seven of the eight NBA head coach positions have been filled by Black candidates.

“It’s incredibly important,” Smith said Monday on First. “I don’t know who pushed this story more than I did because it involved African-Americans in need of the opportunity to be a head coach in the National Basketball Association.”

During the 2012-13 season, a write 14 of the NBA’s 30 head coaches are Black. Eight years later, however, the league has gone backwards, with only seven of the NBA’s 30 head coaches being black for the 2020-21 NBA season to begin.

“As it relates to the NBA, a league that is more than 75% black, you would think that the multitude of opportunities available to these people would be on everyone’s radar long before I had to be on the air and literally. damn about it,” Smith told his co-host, Max Kellerman.

One of the biggest wins, according to Smith, is the fact that these coaches are being given a good chance of succeeding, while the former black coaches look like they’ve failed, being assigned squads. no chance of winning.

“The NBA as a whole should be applauded for really stepping up and making sure that something like this happens,” Smith said. “I think it’s a beautiful thing, I think it’s a beautiful day and we should all be incredibly proud of the opportunity these boys have.”
