Soulslike titles have to work harder than ever to stand out from a crowded genre. They have many characteristics in common, such as B. the stamina management, the fight against big bosses and checkpoint systems that revive enemies when activated. This means that their best shot at maintaining an individual identity comes from the locations and stories these soulslikes are set in, allowing fans to see increasingly diverse worlds with unique aesthetics in the genre. SteelRisingthe upcoming game from French developer Spiders, aims to showcase its own weird and wonderful looking world as a backdrop for high-octane combat and traversal.
The French Revolution is not a setting that players have had the opportunity to experience so often. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Unity is one of the most notable examples of a video game set during this period, and is widely regarded as one of the worst entries in the franchise. It’s that era in which SteelRising takes place in 1789 but with a version of the story where King Louis 16 has gone mad with power and unleashed an army of automatons on Paris and its citizens. As Aegis-turned-bodyguard-automaton, players are tasked with leading the rebellion against King Louis’ machines and freeing Paris from his control.
SteelRising’s setting is unique
A recent trailer at the Nacon Connect digital event was shown SteelRising‘s Dark souls-style combat and big boss battles that paint a murky picture of the streets of Paris. Aegis seems incredibly flexible and mobile for an automaton, with a grappling hook gadget and a quick-looking dash technique that can get her out of a tight spot in no time. The story also appears to feature more real characters from the period, with Queen Marie Antoinette tasking the player with her quest.
The vending machine infested streets of Paris look cold and unforgiving. Trailers have revealed Aegis to have different weapons integrated into different parts of her body. Your weapons will also be varied and upgradeable, offering a degree of build variety. Metal fans that sprout from their hands are used as a shield to ward off enemy blows and bullets. Aegis’ acrobatic nature is indebted to her past as a dancer, a role she fulfilled before becoming a bodyguard to Queen Marie Antoinette. Unfortunately, King Louis’ army seems to be just as quick and flexible as Aegis itself.
SteelRising’s bosses could help set it apart
Boss fights are one of the main factors in how well received and successful a Soulslike title often is. FromSoftware is a master of its craft in this regard, having been responsible for some of the most challenging and intense boss fights ever created. Based on what has been shown so far SteelRising Bosses have serious potential. Huge, imposing automatons that will protect King Ludwig at all costs stand between Aegis and her goal, and she must use every tool in her arsenal to defeat these “titans”. Each one seems to have a unique design and set of moves that should make for some challenging fights.
When SteelRising releasing next month, it will enter a highly competitive genre that has many more games on the horizon such as lies of P, Black Myth: Wukongand Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty. With such fierce competition SteelRising has some work to do if it wants to be known as one of the most popular Soulslike games. Given its unique steampunk setting and fresh take on a little-used historical period, it has a great opportunity to stand out from the competition and offer a challenging, unforgettable experience.
SteelRising will be released on September 8, 2022 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
