Steam users make portraits of Gabe Newell

As the CEO of one of the most powerful video game companies in the world, which helped usher in the digital PC age and introduced the Steam Deck to the mobile market with its Steam client, Gabe Newell, often also called “gifts”, is a name that is familiar to many. Given Valve’s early success with games like half-life and portal Gaming’s bearded Santa still has an impact today and is something of an icon. So much so that some fans have created portraits of him.

A number of threads on the Steam subreddit really brought out the inner artist in some users as there were a number of artworks depicting the Valve manager. While some people have chosen to depict him as he looked a few years ago, others have opted for a more contemporary piece and depicted him with his signature gray beard and long hair. In fact, a user named WorstSpawnPossible used the Midjourney AI tool to create a portrait that shows Newell as Santa himself, complete with a Santa hat.

User Gengar218 also opted for artificial intelligence and used DALL-E 2 to create a Leonardo da Vinci-style image of Newell. Others, like Stacheyp, opted for a pencil drawing instead. Clearly, the business tycoon has had a significant impact on the community. Given the sheer popularity of the Steam PC client, the Gabe Newell name is all too familiar to millions of gamers around the world. While Steam itself continues to be an asset to the company, some older fans will remember the early days of high-quality gaming.

The Valve CEO also caused a stir at the beginning of the year when a user was personally presented with a Steam deck by Gabe Newell. With a film crew in tow, Gaben can be seen going door-to-door in the neighborhood near Valve’s headquarters, handing out the deck to residents who have pre-ordered the mobile device. He even asked them to contact him personally to give feedback on it.

As one of the most influential people in the video game industry Gabe Newell sits up there with the likes of Hideo Kojima, Sam and Dan Houser and Shigeru Miyamoto. As the Steam Deck proved popular and more than just a simple handheld gaming console, Valve has shown it can do more than just create games or influential PC storefronts. The company can actually make a difference in the hardware market as well.
