It is worth noting that MLB does not consider administrative leave a penalty. Players still receive their salary and earn service time. The more important issue is removing potential distractions while the federation investigates the case.

From a purely baseball standpoint, Castro would be difficult to replace in the national team roster. His .283/.333/.375 line, with 20 doubles and 3 own goals, may not have broken the Earth, but he was a solid, big mid-ranger on the team. Figure. He appeared steady, both with the cane and gloves.

The problem is that the national team doesn’t have a great option to replace him. Best choice, Josh Harrison, are playing second base. Alcides Escobar are on a good track right now, but not anything close to a confusingly successful record. Jordy Mercer was activated from the Wounded List and was able to take over, but also without that kind of track record. Carter Kieboom could be an option, but he has yet to show that he can handle pitching in the major leagues.

However, the problems on the ground will solve themselves. It is important that the charges against Castro were fully investigated, and if he did indeed commit such acts, he would be appropriately punished. That will take time, and until then, Castro won’t see the diamond.
