Star Wars TV Shows: all upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series

Disney+ is planning an ambitious lineup of Star Wars series over the next few years

It won’t be long before a brand new Star Wars series starring Andor hits Disney+ on Wednesday, August 31st.

However, Andor is just one in a long line of planned Star Wars series, and Disney+ has an ambitious program slate planned for the next few years.

Here’s everything you need to know about all of the upcoming Star Wars television series, from Obi-Wan Kenobi to Andor to the recently announced Skeleton Crew.

Obi Wan Kenobi

Why is? Hiding on Tattooine and watching over young Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan is drawn from his self-imposed exile into a new conflict with Darth Vader.

Who is involved? Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting) reprises his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, while Hayden Christensen (Little Italy) plays Sith Inquisitor Darth Vader alongside Moses Ingrams (The Queen’s Gambit). Directed by Deborah Chow (Mr. Robot, The Mandalorian).

Diego Luna as Cassian Andor in Rogue One (Credit: Lucasfilm)

Why is? Andor, a prequel to Rogue One, is about the early days of the Rebellion when the Galactic Empire first took hold. Star Diego Luna has described the series as “a migrant’s journey,” while writer Tony Gilroy explained that it will focus on Cassian Andor’s home planet being colonized by the Empire.

Who is involved? Diego Luna (Narcos: Mexico), Alan Tudyk (Firefly) and Forest Whittaker reprise their Rogue One characters Cassian Andor, K2SO and Saw Gerara. They are joined by Stellan Skarsgård (Mamma Mia, Dune), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) and Kyle Soller (You, Me, and the Apocalypse). Tony Gilroy (Bourne) is writing, while Toby Haynes (Doctor Who), Ben Caron (Sherlock) and Susanna White (Trust) are directing.

When is it likely to be released? Andor begins streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. The first series will have 12 episodes and it is confirmed that a second series is currently in development.

The bad batch season 2

Third on the list is another Star Wars spin-off, the animated series The Bad Batch. The animated series averaged 321,000 searches a month and was confirmed for a second season in 2022. There aren’t many details on what to expect from the show other than that Clone Force 99 will return for another mission.

Why is? The Bad Batch is an animated series about a “bad bunch” of clone troopers who did work for hire in the early days of the Galactic Empire – think Star Wars makes The A Team.

Who is involved? The creative team on The Clone Wars, Rebels and the first series of The Bad Batch remain intact, with Dave Filoni leading that show as well.

When is it likely to be released? There’s no official release date beyond 2022 just yet, but with Disney tending to churn out these series, it’ll likely be ready sometime in the fall after Andor.

The Mandalorian Season 3

Why is? The ongoing adventures of the Mandalorian Din Djarin, reunited with his adopted child Baby Yoda (I refuse to call him Grogu) during The Book of Boba Fett.

Who is involved? Pedro Pascal (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) plays the Mandalorian, and Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) is also expected to reappear as the villainous Moff Gideon. Jon Favreau continues to serve as executive producer.

When is it likely to be released? A February 2023 release window was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2022 in late May.

Why is? Ahsoka Tano – a former Jedi apprentice – has hinted at a search for a missing Imperial Grand Admiral in her guest appearances on The Mandalorian, so it’s believed her series will be dedicated to that search. It’s a continuation of a story from the animated series Star Wars: Rebels in which Admiral Thrawn and Ahsoka’s friend Ezra disappeared in a cliffhanger ending.

Who is involved? Rosario Dawson (Daredevil) plays Ahsoka Tano in live action. Ewan McGregor recently confirmed his partner Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) will be appearing in some capacity, and Dawson has hinted that Hayden Christensen will be starring as Darth Vader. The series is overseen by Dave Filoni, who works on a number of Star Wars series.

When is it likely to be released? Sometime in 2023.

The Acolyte

Why is? The Acolyte is a “mystery thriller” set in the Renaissance era of the Galactic Republic, one hundred years before the events of The Phantom Menace. It’s a series that asks how the Sith managed to infiltrate the Senate without being noticed by the Jedi.

Who is involved? Leslye Headland (co-creator of Russian Doll) is showrunner of The Acolyte. No casting has been officially confirmed by Lucasfilm, but industry reports suggest Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games, The Hate U Give) will star.

When is it likely to be released? There is no official release date for The Acolyte yet, but it will likely be either late 2023 or early 2024.

A picture of Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian in Solo; a picture of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian in The Rise of Skywalker (Credit: Lucasfilm)

Why is? A series focusing on Lando Calrissian, Han Solo’s friend and rival from the original trilogy.

Who is involved? Justin Simien, creator of Netflix’s Dear White People, is developing Lando as a miniseries. However, it’s unclear whether Donald Glover or Billy Dee Williams will appear in the series; In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Glover was noncommittal about the series and hinted that it’s one of several projects he may be working on.

When is it likely to be released? Since this series hasn’t been updated since it was announced in December 2020, it will likely take some time before it actually manifests.

Skeleton Crew

Why is? Skeleton Crew, the Star Wars series we know the least about, was recently described in a Vanity Fair article as “a galactic take on classic ’80s Amblin coming-of-age adventure films.” A casting call has been issued for four children aged around 11 to 12. The working title, Grammar Rodeo, was a reference to a Simpsons episode in which Bart and his friends steal a car and run off for a week.

Who is involved? Jude Law (Gattaca, The Young Pope) will star in Skeleton Crew, although we don’t know in what capacity. Jon Watts – director of Marvel’s three Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland – is set to develop Grammar Rodeo. Also included is Chris Ford, Watts co-writer of the Spider-Man films.

When is it likely to be released? 2023 is all we know so far, although it’s likely to be in the second half of the year.

How about…?

The book by Boba Fett season 2

Boba Fett’s book wrapped up on Disney+ earlier this year to generally mixed reviews at best. While the finale hinted at a possible second season, there hasn’t been any official confirmation of a new season yet.

Given that The Book of Boba Fett apparently got bored with being about Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and shifted the focus towards Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian towards the end, it’s possible we won’t see Boba Fett in his own series but will recur in other Star Wars series as a guest star.

Star Wars: Visions Season 2

Star Wars: Visions is an anime anthology produced by Japanese animation studios. It is the most critically acclaimed piece of Star Wars television to date. While there’s no news yet on a possible second season, an extension is certainly very likely. Expect more news at Star Wars Celebration 2022 in late May.

Tales of the Jedi

Tales of the Jedi is an anthological anthology series that was inadvertently confirmed when a schedule for Star Wars Celebration 2022 was released early. Little is currently known about the series, but no doubt you can expect it soon.

Rangers of the New Republic

Rangers of the New Republic was first announced in December 2020 and was being developed as a spin-off of The Mandalorian, and Gina Carano was expected to reprise her Mandalorian role as Cara Dune.

In February 2021, Carano, a transphobic Trump supporter and anti-vaccination activist, shared an Instagram post comparing criticism of her political views to the Holocaust; Disney then severed ties with the actor and announced in November 2021 that the series Rangers of the New Republic had been canceled.
