Star Citizen is free to play for a limited time, including a $600 ship

Star Citizen is hosting another free fly event, giving players access to eight ships, some costing hundreds of dollars.
StarCitizenMaking the game free to play for a limited time, the latest Free Fly event will feature a selection of eight ships to be featured in the community’s Ship Showdown 2022 event. In the ongoing event, players vote for their favourite StarCitizen Ships, with the eight participants in the Free Fly event being the winners of the first round.
StarCitizen runs free fly events fairly regularly to celebrate certain milestones, community events, or just to give new players a chance to try out the game before deciding to support the project. This latest free fly event runs until September 16th, while some of the game’s starter packs are also available at a discount should players decide to pull the trigger on a purchase. StarCitizen Foregoes the usual pre-purchase options found in most games and instead lets players buy individual ships to access the game, and some of those ships come at a hefty price.
while all StarCitizen‘s ships can be earned with in-game currency through gameplay, the eight ships featured in the Ship Showdown Free-Fly event are redeemable at the game’s spaceports completely free for the duration of the event. These ships include the $600 Carrack, the $475 Origin 600i, the $325 Aegis Redeemer, the $260 Crusader Mercury, the $240 RSI Scorpius, the $125 Argo RAFT, the $70 Aegis Avenger Titan, and the $60 Anvil C8X Pisces Expedition. In total, these eight ships total a whopping $2,155, a significant cash investment for virtual spaceships.
StarCitizen has been the subject of controversy for its exorbitant pricing model, apparently aimed at wealthy “whale” players willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for access to ships, despite the game still being in an incomplete early alpha stage. Despite or because of that StarCitizen is the most crowdfunded project in history, raising over $400 million in funding over its 11-year development. Luckily, for interested players on a budget, there are still some reasonably priced packages like the $45 Aurora MR Starter Pack.
Of course for a game in development, StarCitizen regularly receives major updates that add new features or refine existing ones, so players who choose to play the game can expect plenty of new content in the future as developer Cloud Imperium Games continues to make progress. For those who want to give the game a shot, these free fly events are a great way to see if the investment is worth it.
StarCitizen is available on PC.
