Spotify has been actively working on its apps, with some changes being welcomed and others causing frustration from users.
Spotify Android users have noticed that Car View, the simple view of the Now Playing screen that appears when you connect to your car stereo via Bluetooth, has disappeared from the app.
Spotify has confirmed this was intentional, saying:
We can confirm that we are removing the car view feature. However, this does not mean that we do not want to improve the way our users listen to Spotify while driving. On the contrary, we are actively exploring new ways to deliver the best in-car listening experience. Think of dropping the car view as something that needs to happen in an effort to clear the way for new innovations to come.
Please bear with us during this time. While we’re working behind the scenes to improve the experience, one alternative is hands-free listening via the Google Assistant. The feature also works with Google Maps so you can navigate while listening to Spotify. To do that, you can link your accounts and say ‘Hey Google, let’s play Spotify’.
Spotify users’ failure to dismiss Vehicle View without a replacement device in place promotes unsafe driving. Spotify recommends using its integration with Google Maps and Waze in your car for a safer experience. Another alternative would be Car Thing, Spotify’s music control utility for car use, which was recently sold.
Besides getting rid of Car View, Spotify is also testing a new TikTok-like video feed.
Accessible via the new Explore button, the feed features vertical music videos that can be swiped through.
In a statement, Spotify confirmed the feature, but noted that there is no news around whether it will roll out more widely:
“At Spotify, we regularly conduct a number of experiments in an effort to improve the user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience, and others just serve as an important lesson. We have no further news to share at this time.”
Spotify has nearly 400 million monthly active users and remains the largest music streaming service in the world.
