Spider-Man: No Way Home – How Green Goblin is related to Mysterio

Tom Holland’s Spiderman always prided himself on being the morally correct person, and that proved to be a huge downfall to his character. With his desire to be a hero that only works on the right side of the front lines, he has been forced to compromise that on multiple occasions. That guilt is what creates the connection between two of the web’s most formidable opponents of slinging heroes.
In Holland’s own films, he faced Vulture (Michael Keaton) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). His third film, Spider-Man: There’s no way home will feature several Spider-Man villains including those from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield films. Among them are Willem Dafoe’s Green Elves who will likely remind Holland’s Spider-Man of some of the guilt he still carries within him.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is an emotional movie because Peter recently lost his mentor, Iron Man. Thinking he might have finally found someone else to trust, Peter gifted EDITH to Mysterio, only to discover he’d made a huge mistake. He is then forced to try to fix the bug by defeating Mysterio but even this doesn’t go as planned. Mysterio tries to use optical illusion to trick Peter further, but eventually his methods run out. Mysterio was shot by one of his own drones and apparently died shortly thereafter. Although Mysterio’s death was not directly at the hands of Spider-Man, Peter still holds himself accountable for not being able to save him. For him, even those who have committed some of the ultimate betrayals in the world, do not deserve to die for what they have done.
Mysterio’s death is similar to the Green Goblin in First Maguire Spiderman movie. The Green Goblin died shortly after revealing his true identity to Peter, in the hope that it would allow him to let his guard down enough for the Green Gobin to kill him. He calls out his glider which Spider-Man quickly dodges. Unfortunately, the Green Goblin’s reaction time wasn’t quick and he was hit by his own glider. After learning that Green Goblin’s true identity As Norman Osborn, Maguire’s Spider-Man became as conflicted as Holland’s Spider-Man after Mysterio’s death. Maguire’s Peter admires Norman Osborn, and even though he’s the man in the Green Goblin costume, the Green Goblin’s death means Norman’s. These complicate things for Maguire’s Peter in many ways, including his relationship with his best friend Harry Osborn.
Other Spider-Man villains have also died under circumstances not directly attributable to Spider-Man. In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock sacrificed himself to destroy his experiment. In Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man 2, Electro is electrocuted and thus defeated. Even Vulture was defeated by his own invention in Spider-Man: Homecoming, even though he’s not dead. The Green Goblin and Mysterio happen to be emotionally charged rivals for their respective Spider-Mans. Garfield may not have a villain that evokes similar emotions, but he has a score to settle with the Green Goblin.
With the Green Goblin appearing in There is no way home, his presence may remind Holland’s Spider-Man of what happened to Mysterio. Holland’s Spider-Man may not have met the Green Goblin before, but he looks a lot like Doc Ock in monday There is no way home intro videoThe Green Goblin could see that Holland was not like Peter had ever defeated him before. If Maguire appeared in There is no way home and recounting the history between him and the Green Goblin, it may well trigger the feelings Holland has for Mysterio. It was a man he trusted and confided in who deliberately betrayed him. The same can be argued for the relationship of the Green Goblin and Maguire.
If Holland begins to reminisce about what happened to Mysterio, the guilt he feels will likely influence his response to the new group of villains he will confront. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Vulture is imprisoned and is known to be still alive. Doc Ock is said to have been captured and held hostage in There is no way home, and that fate could be the ideal choice for Holland’s Spider-Man. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter was trying to get used to the new Spider-Man suit given to him by Tony Stark and one of its features was an instant kill mode. Peter staunchly opposed the use of this and ended up only using it to help the Avengers in their fight against Thanos.
With Holland’s Spider-Man perception questioned in There is no way home Now that Mysterio has revealed his identity and subsequently labeled him a murderer, circumstances for him have drastically changed. Now that the world is starting to turn against him, Peter’s feelings for himself are likely to waver. The feeling of having to isolate himself from the people he loves to protect them will probably only continue to affect his mental and emotional health. Holland has set a record for call There is no way home “sad” and “dark” meaning whatever his character faces will change the course of Spider-Man for years to come.
Spider-Man: There’s no way home hits theaters on December 17, 2021.
