Sparks of Hope unveils new gameplay Deep Dive
Ubisoft gave players a first look at gameplay changes and updates in Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope during Ubisoft Forward 2022.
Ubisoft Forward 2022 gave players new insights into many of the studio’s upcoming titles, not least the next game in partnership with Nintendo. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. The show wasted no time and jumped right into the 2017 sequel Mario + Rabbid Kingdom Battle to show what new adventures await the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom and Ubisoft’s chaotic rabbit-like creatures. As part of the presentation, Ubisoft gave players a deeper dive into the series’ turn-based gameplay and the changes Ubisoft Paris and Ubisoft Milan are bringing to the sequel.
That Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope Deep Dive shows the heroes heading to the planet Terra Flora to investigate the influence of the villain Cursa and attempt to repair the damage already done. Faye, an Associate Producer on the game, was on hand to commentate on the deep dive and to outline the gameplay updates made to the game’s aforementioned turn-based strategy, teasing how big some of the environments will be. However, the video quickly returns to the gameplay and gives players a proper look at the combat as Mario and his friends face off against a giant Wiggler infected by Cursa’s dark matter.
One of the first changes players will notice is a greater emphasis on character archetypes, stats, and strengths and weaknesses, creating a greater emphasis on team composition. An example given by the Deep Dive is that Mario is a mobility focused character, while Bowser acts more as a tank to absorb damage. Players can also equip Sparks, which appear to act as character modifiers, granting unique bonuses such as increased ice damage or temporary invisibility for the character they are attached to.
This emphasis on archetypes, strengths and weaknesses also extends to enemy units, which players can get a glimpse of before engaging in combat against the giant Wiggler, who is trying to knock Mario and the Rabbids’ train off the tracks drive out. As Faye says in the Deep Dive, knowing the enemy units on the field allows players to choose their team to best counteract the enemies on the field.
Along with these new features, the Deep Dive amplified the changes already seen spark of hopeGameplay was first revealed at Nintendo Direct in June 2022. These include an emphasis on mobility in combat encounters and signature techniques that can be used against enemies to temporarily neutralize enemies, grant defense bonuses, or deal devastating damage.
