PlayStation is one of the largest video game franchises in the world, having been a dominant force in the console industry for nearly three decades. It looks like the brand may be returning to gaming on the go as a new patent suggests PlayStation-styled mobile controller is under development.

In the current age of smartphones and cloud streaming, the era of dedicated mobile gaming devices seems to have come and gone. Xbox has led the field, making much of its content accessible from anywhere, anytime through xCloud, a service that allows users to stream games using Microsoft’s dedicated servers. PlayStation offers a similar service called PS Remote Play, although it doesn’t use Sony’s reservation servers, but actually the user’s PS4 or PS5, creating a stable internet connection at both ends. is absolutely necessary to make the most of it. Players can even sync a DualShock 4 or DualSense controller with their phone to play their games.

A new patent from Sony seems to indicate that a DualShock 4-inspired mobile controller could be on the way. Originally discovered by Andy Robinson by VGC, the patent is for a gamepad that attaches to mobile devices and was filed earlier this week by Sony Interactive Entertainments Japan division. As Robinson pointed out, the gamepad with left and right handles is modeled after PS4’s DualShock 4 Controller instead of PS5’s DualSense, it’s obvious the shape of the control wings and button layout. Not shown in the patent drawing is the shaft between the two grips that allows the user to change the viewing angle of their device.

The development of this gamepad comes after Sony announced its new pursuit into the mobile gaming market. Last October, Sony hired Nicola Sebastiani to Head of PlayStation Studio’s Mobile division, who has spent the past eight years at Apple in its own mobile games division. The appearance of PlayStation on mobile devices has been very diverse, there are some games such as Run Sackboy! Run and Uncharted: Lucky Hunter is in production, but it mainly focuses on companion apps like God of War – Mimir .’s Vision. Sony recently announced Wipeout Rush, a card-based racing game based on the classic PlayStation franchise with a warm reception by fans.

A DualShock 4 portable gamepad would be a neat accessory for PS Remote Play users, but there were some concerns that came to mind. For example, will this device only be compatible with PlayStation mobile games, or will developers have to start introducing new options specifically for this gamepad? This can be a moot point, since Not every mobile game has controller support. Either way, this patent is proof of Sony’s determination to expand PlayStation brand for mobile devices.
