‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ fan poster restores chilling original character design
With the release its first trailer, exaggeration for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has crossed the roof, as fans braced for a surprisingly exciting sequel to the film in 2020. But the online reaction was radically different from the original movie’s first trailer. Notoriously, that revealed a disgusting semi-realistic design for Sonic, causing such an outcry that Sony went back to the drawing board and recreated the character’s look and feel from scratch.
Then, throughout the film and its sequel, Sonic appears more to match his video game self. However, in some of the alternate universes out there, we might have stuck with the original design that gave the heroic hedgehog a chill through both movies. This horribly hilarious fan poster, shared by u / novusanimis on the r/SonicTheHedgehog subreddit, imagine what it would be like if Scary Sonic survived the sequel… and was joined by a Tails from your nightmares.
In fact, the canceled Sonic design is even worse than this. As in that OG trailer, he has thin white furry fingers instead of his signature gloves, and his body proportions make him oddly tall. The result is something that has gone in the right direction and indeed into the eerie valley. Then the character rework is definitely for the benefit of the franchise, even if it causes the amount of overtime work that can’t be solved for the animation team.
Although there is doubt that a follow-up will even occur if the design remains unchanged, Sonic 2 promises to continue the fan-pleasing nature of the first movie. On top of Tails (video game actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey) debut and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik assuming his classic look, Idris Elba is entering the fray as the iconic echidna Knuckles icon, whom the trailer teases will do Sonic’s trick, as he is manipulated by Eggman to work with him.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 races to theaters on April 8, 2022. Thankfully, it won’t look like this fan poster.
