Some Apex Legends players would like to make changes to the leaderboard to address smurfing issues

Season 14 of Apex Legends, known as Hunted, is almost here, and Respawn Entertainment has already unveiled a lot of new content and changes for the battle royale. For example, the new Legend Vantage will be added to the game and changes will be made to Kings Canyon. In addition to this new content, some players are hoping the developers will make changes to fix issues with Smurfs in ranked play.

Smurfing is nothing new in video games; A number of competitive online games have had to deal with the problem in one way or another. Unfortunately, Apex Legends is no different, as over the seasons high-level players have created new accounts to play with, often crushing less-experienced players. Ahead of the release of Season 14, some players are requesting that Respawn Entertainment make adjustments to ranked mode to combat these types of smurfing issues.

On Reddit, numerous members of the community have started discussing possible changes to the leaderboard to improve the experience for players. In particular, a user named Mayors_Son started a thread suggesting that Respawn Entertainment should increase the level requirements for Competitive mode. According to the Reddit user, they suggested that new accounts should reach level 50 before playing ranked, making it harder for potential Smurfs to join low-ranked lobbies. Additionally, newer players would need to get used to the game better before jumping into the competitive environment.

In addition to this idea, others on Reddit suggested that players should be required to link their phones to their accounts in order to play leaderboards. A number of users even pointed out that several other competitive online games are already forcing players to play such as: over watch and dota. This would add another step players would have to go through to start smurfing, which Reddit users argued would minimize the problem Apex Legends.

Unsurprisingly, smurfing is a worrying issue for many users, as smurfs can often compromise the integrity of ranked mode. As players with higher skill levels play on low-level accounts, it defeats many of the purposes of a leaderboard system by allowing players of different skills to compete against each other. This is mainly due to how easy it is for low rank lobbies to be filled by high rank players as they just need to create a new account and play multiple games to reach level 10 to join ranked games at the lower ranks.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for ranked mode Apex Legends. With Season 14’s launch just a few days away, there’s a chance that Respawn Entertainment could try to change things up in the coming days. However, players will have to wait and see if the changes suggested by community members actually materialize.

Apex Legends is now available on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
