With the recent “Don’t Say Gay” laws under review in several states across America, celebrating Pride Month feels especially meaningful this year. The phrase “that’s so gay” has an enduring legacy of derogatory usage in our modern vernacular — a linguistic trend that the founders of canned wine brand So Gay Rosé are reversing with the ever-popular summertime (OK, any time) drink.

“We’re seeing such an attack on the word ‘gay’ right now. Our philosophy is that being ‘so gay’ is SO something to celebrate,” says Tim Chan, co-founder and journalist of So Gay Rosé. “To be honest, we [all] actually have a lot more in common than you might think: we all just want the freedom to live our lives the way we want; to gather with people with whom we find fellowship and boldly speak our minds for all to hear. It’s not about being gay – it’s about being yourself.”

Chan grew up in a very conservative and religious household and community in the ’90s and 2000s. He recalls that in his childhood, calling something or someone “gay” was often used as the equivalent of calling something “nasty” or “lame.” “When I was growing up and a classmate said my outfit was ‘so gay,’ it wasn’t usually a positive thing. So how do we condition ourselves to see it as a good thing? That’s one of the reasons why our motto is “So gay, so awesome”. There is nothing negative or wrong about being gay and our history – and our wine -[is] Prove for.”

For example, Gay Rosé was launched in June 2021 with its low-calorie rosé can packs by OG, and in just a year the brand has already expanded its offering to include Chardonnay and a number of collaborations with other brands. Chan came out to his family and friends at the age of 28, so he understands how scary and painful this process can be — he was there. “It took me a long time to feel comfortable speaking [about] my sexuality, let alone being proud from that. I never imagined starting a brand with “gay” in the name. But that just shows you that society is changing and people are growing… and yes, things are getting better. Whether you’re drinking So Gay Rosé or partying at Pride, I hope people remember that the best way to live your life is on your own terms, on your own timeline, and in your own light. I am proof of that. And I’ve never been so proud,” he says.

Chan and So Gay Rosé co-founder Josh Campbell (a self-confessed straight LGBT ally) has made it his mission to remove the stigma associated with the phrase “so gay,” reclaiming the expression and engaging the LGBT community through the messages to strengthen the brand and donations to organizations and nonprofits that support the community – all year round, not just during Pride month in June.
