Many players have called The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim many things over the past decade. Unfortunately, “Polished” isn’t usually one of them. The fact is, whether one thinks it’s the best action RPG of the 2010s or a criminally overrated game held back only by mods, Skyrimhas been something of a mess since day one. One Reddit user received a reminder of that fact during an unusual encounter during his unmodified playthrough.

Reddit user SupahLuke walking through the yard of SkyrimUniversity of Winterhold when he encountered the Arch-Mage Savos Aren. Of course, it wouldn’t be strange if Savos Aren wasn’t dead at that point in his level.

The Dark Elf Mage leads the College of Winterhold, the Kingdom of Skyrim’s oldest and only current school of magic. However, part of College of Winterhold’s Mission, he dies trying to stop a Thalmor agent from unleashing a powerful magical artifact. Upon completing the quest, the player will succeed him as the new Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold. However, it looks like a bug could cause Savos Aren to reappear back to normal after he was presumed dead and gone. This is why SupahLuke ends up clashing with the old Arch-Mage, after becoming the new one.

The post’s most upvoted comment was one that compared the screenshot attached to the Spider-Man meme pointing at his doppelganger. Others have made many jokes about Savos Aren being a ghost or hallucination caused by the Dragonborn’s guilt. Many also choose Savos Aren’s default line, “What you learn here will last a lifetime. Some, if you’re talented. “If nothing else, that’s certainly an apt statement from an obvious specter. There’s also the fact, as some commenters have pointed out, that Skyrim’s The College of Winterhold does not ban necromancy, offering a legendary explanation for the bug.

Notably, it’s not uncommon for NPCs to return from the dead The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. A series of relatively common glitches cause the Companion’s Kodlak Whitemane and Skjor to return from the dead from their quest. Players can even accept quests from those who have resurrected Skyrim character.

Again, Skyrim’s has always been a buggy game and is still a game after two re-releases. Some players even argued that both Skyrim: Legendary Edition and recently released Anniversary edition caused more errors than they fixed. Of course, what does that say about Bethesda and whether it does? The Elder Scrolls 5 Charming or angry is a matter of opinion.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Anniversary Edition currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
