D.C.’s 202 dates again to 1947, the period of the rotary cellphone, when AT&T designated space codes throughout the nation to facilitate long-distance calls that didn’t require an operator. These states sufficiently small to solely have just one space code — Maryland (301) and Virginia (703), for instance — had been assigned ones with a ‘0’.
