Dolly Parton has given us so much during her 75 years, from hits like “Jolene” to her Dollyworld theme park, and even more recently, Moderna vaccine. On Tuesday night, country music legend gave us another gift: She recreated one of her most iconic magazine covers and invited us all to come take a look. Read on to see Parton recreate her Playboy magazine cover from 1978 and to find out why she decided to go into those ears, 43 years later.
On July 20, Parton posted a video on her Twitter account showing her wearing one Playboy-inspired black rabbit costume with a sparkly pink and white bow, a callback to her 1978 cover shoot for the magazine. “Remember when I said I was going to pose on Playboy magazine when I was 75 years old? Well, I’m 75, and they don’t have magazines anymore,” she said. (Playboy is still publishing online, but has not publish a printed version as of March 2020)
But that didn’t stop Parton from returning to the look. “I did a little photo shoot in this little outfit and I have a cover made of either the new Dolly, or the new old Dolly,” she said, holding both the original cover and her photo up to the large frame. “In the first part, remember this, I was like a little butterball in there. Well, now I’m string cheese,” she joked.
Parton became the first country singer to shoot for Playboy when she was 32, and the music icon talked about wanting to do magazine photography again. “I’m not going to retire,” Parton said 60 minutes Australia in an interview in March 2020. “I intend to on the cover of Playboy magazine as before. See, I did Playboy magazine years ago and I thought it would be great if they agreed – I don’t know if they did – if I could be on the cover again when I’m 75. “
However, her latest entertainment doesn’t appear to be directly collaborating with the magazine. “You think Playboy should you at least pay me for the photo session? I know,” Parton joked in the 2021 video.
According to Parton, Playboy redux in honor of her husband Carl Thomas Dean’s 79th birthday on July 20th. “My husband has always loved the original cover of PlayboySo I tried to think of something to make him happy,” explained Parton. He still thinks I’m a hot girl after 57 years. And I’m not going to try to tell him about it. “
Parton told her fans on Twitter that she dressed up to surprise Dean and sing to him. Parton showed a short photo she gave him with framed photos all edited at the end of the video, she captioned it: “Always #HotGirlSummer for my husband, Carl. Happy birthday sweetheart my love!”

Parton and Dean were together since 1964, after meeting outside a laundromat in Nashville when she was 18 and Dean was 21. The couple then married in 1966 but since then have kept a very private relationship, rarely being photographed or interviewed together. In fact, their relationship was so secret that some people theorized that Dean doesn’t even exist, said Parton Tonight’s reception in 2020.
Parton explained of her shy husband in front of the camera: “Many people have thought that for years, because he didn’t want to be the center of attention. “That’s not who he is. He’s like, a quiet, reserved person and he thinks if he walks out of there in there, he’s never going to get a minute’s peace. and he’s right about that.”
Parton continued, “I’ve always respected and appreciated that in him and I always try to keep him out of the limelight as much as possible. He said, ‘I didn’t choose this world, I did. chose you, and you chose that world. But we can keep our lives separate and together.’ And we do and we have.”
