The Samsung T5 is a fast if expensive external SSD, capable of speeds up to 540MB/s via a 10Gbps USB connection – making it a great choice for storing games or media. It’s available today at historic lows, as the 500GB model has dropped to just £55 on Amazon UK from £70 just a week ago.
Katharine rewatched T5 in 2018, where she found the drive to work excellently. Copying large files was within the bounds you’d expect from an internal SATA SSD, while random read and write speeds were significantly better than the WD My Passport SSD she tested. This should make the T5 a great motivator for actually running games or apps directly from the drive, which not all external SSDs can really handle.
Faster drives exist, which tend to offer double the speed at best, but these portable NVMe SSDs like the Samsung T7 Touch or Crucial X8 also cost significantly more. For comparison, T7 Touch costs £70 when Recommended RPS Crucial X8 will cost £76 right now. These drives may be worth it if you frequently copy large files (think 4K videos, game installs, or Linux ISOs) but their random read and write performance tends to be quite similar to those of conventional drives. competitive SATA-based like T5.
In addition to offering fast speeds, the T5 also looks good in blue and withstands abuse thanks to its solid aluminum construction. The drive uses a detachable USB-C cable to connect without any additional power requirements, so it’s easy to connect to a wide range of devices from smartphones and computers boards to computers or game consoles of any kind. (Remember, if you’re using the external drive with your PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, you’ll only be able to use it to play latest-gen games or temporarily store current-gen titles. now; you can’t play these newer games directly from the drive because both consoles have the incredibly fast internal memory that the game relies on!)
In any case, £55 for a fast and powerful 500GB portable SSD seems like a fair price to me, and I hope you’ll agree. Let us know what you think in the comments, it really made sense to me and we’ll get to know you in the next section.
