What is Admiral Makarov?

Admiral Makarov is a 4,000-ton Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate.

For comparison, the battleship Moskva is three times the size with 12,490 tons.

It entered service with the Russian Navy at the end of 2017.

Not long after, in August 2018, it was monitored by the UK armed forces as it passed through the English Channel on its way to becoming part of Russia’s Black Sea fleet – its flagship being the Moskva.

Admiral Makarov has been involved in Russian activities in the Mediterranean Sea, including launching cruise missile strikes on Syria as part of Moscow’s campaign in support of dictator Bashar Assad. of the country.

Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, the ship has been involved in part of a blockade of Ukrainian ports and may have been involved in some of the missile attacks Moscow targeted Ukraine.

What happened to Admiral Makarov?

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on the social networking platform Telegram that Admiral Makarov was hit by a Ukrainian missile attack on Friday morning (May 6).

Mr. Gerashchenko reported that a ‘Neptune’ missile – the same anti-ship missile used to sink the Moscow ship – hit the warship and it caught fire.

It is believed to have been in the vicinity of Snake Island – also known as Zmiinyi Island – when the attack took place.

The Russian government has not yet commented on the alleged attack.

Ukrainian state news site Dumskaya reported that Russian aircraft and naval ships had left Crimea after the annexation to aid Admiral Makarov.

The ship is believed to have between 180 and 200 employees on board.

If true, Ukraine’s missile strike could reduce Russia’s ability to launch missile strikes on land targets from the sea.

Russia has been unable to strengthen its Black Sea fleet – or replace the Moskva – because Turkey has closed the Bosporus Strait to military ships.

The UK Ministry of Defense said the UK had about 20 ships in the Black Sea at the time the Moscow ship sank.

The latest news comes after reports that US intelligence helped Ukraine locate Moscow.

An unnamed Washington official revealed on Thursday that the United States had provided Kyiv with “a wide range of intelligence” but had nothing to do with Ukraine’s decision to target Moscow.

The New York Times on the same day also reported that US intelligence helped Ukraine kill senior Russian military generals – a claim the Pentagon refused to confirm but did not completely deny. Russian warship Admiral Makarov ‘hit by Ukrainian missile’
