According to a recent poll taken shortly after the ruling, most Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Meanwhile, the mouthpieces of Russian President Vladimir Putin on state television are completely giddy about this development – but not because they are against abortion.
The Soviet Union was the first state in the world to legalize abortion in 1920, and the practice remains popular in post-Soviet Russia. Putin has resisted proposals from other government officials to ban the process.
What thrilled Kremlin propagandists was that American ruling society was sharply divided – a bonus for Russia at a time when any distraction from its brutal invasion of Ukraine is savored.
“What’s happening in America right now is very interesting,” Vladimir Solovyov said during the airing of his show on Monday. The evening with Vladimir Solovyov on channel Rossiya-1. Discussing the Supreme Court ruling, the moderator snapped, “America proclaimed it was winning, that its liberal values had triumphed, but suddenly here’s this law banning abortion.” Solovyov accused pro-choice activists of “Satanism ‘ and mimicking her screams, distorting his voice and facial expression to show his disgust as he yelled the words ‘My choice.’ The contradiction of mocking both the law and its opponents seems perfectly reasonable in Moscow, where Western divisions are prized and America as a whole is loathed in pro-Kremlin circles.
Solovyov added: “The world is currently sinking not only in war but also in total dictatorship. Americans will have to tighten the screws in everything that happens in their country. The next law to be revised is the one on gay marriage.” The state TV host predicted that overturning more convictions “will tear America apart”. In a message to US Conservatives, Solovyov said: “Tsk-tsk-tsk, we understand you so well. Come join us, we’ll give you a plot of land to develop.” The host, who immediately backtracked from allegedly agreeing with the Conservatives’ stance, slammed the verdict: “What do we see? The brutal violation of all freedoms in America.”
Political scientist Sergei Mikheyev claimed, “I don’t think democracy ever existed, but if it did exist, I’m sure we are living through the era of its disintegration.” Mikheyev betrayed his distorted view of what democracy means, and claimed that if Russia were a democratic country, Boris Yeltsin and other former government leaders would have been shot, or at least tortured, and herded across Russia in a cage for public viewing. In a crude tie-in with Russia’s current territorial aspirations, Mikheyev speculated that after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia would seize as many territories as possible if the will of the people were ever involved. He opined: “Ukraine would not be left with much but Kyiv, and even that is debatable… We would have smothered the Baltic and cruised back and forth across it.”
Mikheyev hinted that the latest verdict was a deliberate distraction artificially engineered by Democrats to influence the outcome of the upcoming midterm elections without attempting to explain the mechanics of his conspiracy theory. Alluding to the idea of a civil war that would divide America, he further argued for dividing the United States “into southerners and northerners” and playing both factions against one another.
“They were all so focused on their confrontation with Russia that they didn’t even realize they were losing America.”
Political scientists pointed out that the topic of influencing public opinion in the US is a frequent topic in Russian media circles: “We often wonder whether or not we should influence things in the United States of America.” Mikheyev suggested: “We should say to the Confederate Republicans: The Northerners are totally out of control…to the Northerners we would say: ‘These backward Confederates, they’re completely out of touch.’ If there is such an opportunity, we should talk to everyone: far right, far left. This, of course, is very difficult and very expensive.” Mikheyev argued with his imaginary opponents: “Anything is possible if there is the will to do it.”
Deputy Dean of World Politics at Moscow State University Andrey Sidorov was equally enthusiastic about Russia exploiting America’s internal divisions: “When they talk about abortion, it’s a much broader issue. This is about states’ rights… I’m for states’ rights! Just as they want to divide our country, we should support the rights of the states… If this movement continues in the right direction, it will not be divided into south and north, but into two coasts and the center.”
This idea is not new as the Kremlin has for years courted fringe, ultra-nationalist and secessionist parties to destabilize the US, NATO and the EU. The abortion discourse is just another wedge to widen the social divide in America.
“They will most likely perish. This fall will not happen all at once, but the fall of the modern Roman Empire is underway,” concluded expert Andrei Sidorchik on Monday morning’s episode of 60 minutesand adds that the “schizophrenic” West has no future.
Similarly, Kira Sazonova of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economics and Public Administration argued during Solovyov’s show that “given that today’s America is the frontman of the world, based on fundamental injustice, it is logical to assume that – whether it lasts 3 years or 30 years – this colonial, exploitative system is going under.”
Solovyov surmised with smug satisfaction, “They were all so focused on their confrontation with Russia that they didn’t even realize they were losing America.”
