River City girl fans should consider getting a zero before the sequel

WayForward has been quite busy over the past few years. Above all continue with the beloved Shantae franchise and work on many external IP based games, The way forward has found considerable success with its beats River City Girl. Technically, River City Girl not the original WayForward; it is a subsection of Kunio-kun franchise, and its development is overseen by Kunio-kun Arc System Works owner. However, WayForward has actually created River City Girl and Kunio-kun its own character, which received rave reviews for the game’s writing, combat, art, and more. No wonder River City Girls 2 has been endorsed by WayForward.


However, WayForward recently told fans that it has another project in the works it refers to as River City Girls Zero. As the title suggests, the game can be interpreted as a prequel to 2019 River City Girls, but it’s really not a new game. Rather, it’s an upgraded and newly translated version of Kunio-kun games in it River City Girl stars Misako and Kyoko fight for the first time alongside their respective boyfriends, Kunio and Riki. River City Girls Zero will give a lot of fans the first chance to experience the origins of Misako and Kyoko.

River City Girls Zero Explained

River City Girls Zero Unusual changes

River City Girls Zero‘s original name was Shin Nekketsu Koha: Kunio-tachi no Banka. Released in 1994 for Super Famicom is exclusive to Japan, Kunio-tachi no Banka saw Nekketsu High School students Kunio and Riki sent to prison for a hit and run they swore they didn’t commit. When they receive word that a Kunio look-alike has been discovered around Nekketsu School, Kunio and Riki break out of the prison in search of the lookalike who they believe has framed them. Along the way, they reunite with Misako and Kyoko, who join them in their quest to clear their names.

Kunio-tachi no Banka To be a beat similar to River City Girl, although all four main characters form a party where the player switches between characters, rather than encouraging the player to focus on one character. Kunio-tachi no Banka also features two-player co-op, meaning fans can hand over the controller to friends just like in River city girls. Overall, the game’s story is definitely about the plight of Kunio and Riki, but Misako and Kyoko remain central to their journey. In fact, look at the story upgrades and tweaks WayForward teased River City Girls Zero, they may have an even more prominent role than before.

River City Girls Zero changes


While WayForward remains loyal to Super Famicom’s 16-bit interface, River City Girls Zero polished some Kunio-tachi no Bankaof the presentation. WayForward promises an anime trailer with a new theme song for the game, as well as cutscenes presented as manga panels. The result is, River City Girls Zero looks like it will be a charming mix of old and new content. It probably won’t have much of an impact on the present River City Girl plot, as it’s just a translation of an older title in the franchise, but it’s a valuable piece of history.

River City Girls 2 is aiming for a summer 2022 release, but River City Girls Zero Will start pre-ordering for physical copies via Limited Run Game on January 28th.
