Right-wing ultranationalists are Putin’s useful idiots

National populists – the same people who are dogmatic about protecting national borders – are in a tough spot right now, thanks Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The same ultra-nationalists passionately Building a wall on the southern border of the United States, or the obliteration of the EU and the return to hard borders between European nation-states – seemed completely unconcerned about Ukraine’s borders in the run-up to the war. These people are also known for that fetishization of masculinity and toughnessand yet suddenly they became introspective, nuanced and reserved in their apologies for Putin’s invasion a sovereign nation.

So far, the ultranationalists have had the luxury of criticizing the establishment without having to take any real responsibility. In her eyes, no matter what they said or did, the elites of both parties were always effeminate, decadent and awkward. Going against what they said was a small risk.
