A desperate attempt to rescue a 5-year-old Moroccan boy trapped at the bottom of a well for four days ended in tears on Saturday.
A rescue team removed part of the hillside and then dug a horizontal tunnel, finally reaching Rayan Awram, where they found the child dead.
The country has been ravaged by life-or-death drama unfolding in the city of Ighran since Tuesday, when Rayan fell into a 105-foot-deep well outside his home.
A relative told Reuters TV they heard him cry and put down a phone with a light and camera.
“He’s crying ‘please pick me up,'” the relative said.

Rescuers then sent water, oxygen tanks and a camera showing the child alive. The crews worked tirelessly to break a parallel hole and then drill through the well — a dangerous task with the risk of a rock slide.
